The HBCU Foundation™ Member Schools

There are 105 public and private Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs) throughout the United States. The HBCU Foundation raises scholarship dollars in support of students attending all 105 member institutions.

The very first HBCU was founded in 1837 and today, HBCUs continue to play a critical role in higher education. For too much of America’s history, African Americans could only dream of pursuing a college education and for a period could only receive a college degree from an HBCU. ┬áToday, HBCUs remain as among the most effective means of assuring an African American, or student of any race, receives access to a quality education.

Our 105 member institutions represent just three percent of the nation’s institutions of higher learning, yet account for nearly 20 percent of African American graduates with undergraduate degrees. Because of their unique sensitivity to the needs and vested interest in the success of young African American minds, HBCUs serve as a viable pipeline of African American alumni and student talent, poised to achieve in competitive entrepreneurial, community, corporate, research, academic, governmental and military arenas.

Our 105 member institutions are experts at educating African Americans:

  • HBCUs award more than one in three of the degrees held by African Americans in natural sciences.
